Miss Winifred Margaret Slocock
Winifred Margaret Slocock was born on August 9, 1877, in Donnington, England, to Charles and Mary Slocock. Her father was a banker, and she was the youngest of six children. In 1908, she married Roderick James McNair, a stockbroker and amateur tennis player, in Henley, Oxfordshire. Slocock was a member of the Society of Women Journalists from 1903 to 1907. She was proposed for membership by Mr. Walney, Foreign Editor for the Daily Mail.
In addition to journalism, Slocock enjoyed a successful career as a tennis player. She competed at Wimbledon fifteen times between 1906 and 1925, and she won a gold medal with her doubles partner, Kathleen McKane, at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. Slocock died on March 28, 1954, in London.
